I wanted to share a little bit of a mindset conversation that I had today with a friend of mine. He is one of the top Weight Watcher coaches in OC, a good friend, fitness client of mine, and an all-around great guy (I won’t tell you his name is Jason, just in case you know him- Ha). Actually, he and I have shared clients over the years and helped make a huge impact in lives together which is a super thing we share.
Anyhow, we were walking and talking during a morning coffee, (nowhere to sit these days), and discussing how to better help people at different stages of their lives, particularly with the craziness of this year. You could be at any stage of health and wellness. You may be interested in fitness and weight loss, but not ready to start for your own reason. You may already be heavy into both or one and looking for an assist with the other.
Or as we are seeing more of lately, many people are on a roller coaster of gain, loss, fit and unfit.
Do any of these sound like you? The roller coaster fit for both of us today so we both understand if that’s you.
Well did you know that many people avoid the diets, challenges, weight loss, and fitness for fear of making mistakes or doing it wrong or fear of taking responsibility if it doesn’t work? Here is something that I coach regularly during fitness and coaching success sessions and that is: Be responsible for the outcome that YOU want.
Sounds simple but many times this is the biggest hurdle.
Here are a few things to avoid and overcome which may be hurdles in your way of being successful.
- Don’t wait back and hope things will happen.
- Don’t wait for someone else to take responsibility.
- Go take imperfect action.
- If it doesn’t work out exactly how you planned, you can be proud that you tried.
- Make adjustments as you go and keep pressing on.
See, we’re all going to have mistakes and failures through our journey, but don’t let that fact cause you to be a spectator or a bystander.
Take personal responsibility for the outcomes you want.
- If you want to make an eating change – start small and make it a habit
- If you want more calories burned – get to a fitness class, training session, or jog, get off the couch.
- If you want muscle tone – ask me how to lift weights for muscles (remember, muscle burns fat)
- If you want to drop a dress size or get back into your jeans – Get on a plan and get accountability
Don’t let the fear of failing or not achieving or not being perfect slow you down or deter you from even starting. Take your shot – you never know when you don’t get anymore. And if you have to go through some up’s and downs – that’s good. These are learning lessons and character builders.
Most people are afraid of rejection or failure and it prevents them from taking action (this applies to any area of your life)
They see other, more fit people, and expect to not keep up. – Unrealistic fear.
They are afraid of not finishing a workout class or coming off in a particular way. – Self-judgment
It comes down to avoiding the change because they fear what others might think or that someone might not embrace them – And none of it is true!
I get it, I still deal with it too, but knowing that most people feel that way is the exact reason you shouldn’t. Be aggressive when others are fearful. Know that you have coaches and a support team here to help you.
Make things happen while others wait in hopes that things will happen for them – Be the Change!
You are either in the game and playing or just sitting in the stands watching…..and the clock is ticking – I hope you get in the game.
